Since I finished university in 2003 I discovered my driver. While my friends were thinking about becoming investment bankers, I was sure about the potential of “smart capital”, of course that was not the name at that time, but I always believed in the power of bringing different actors together to create value.
On the one hand you have entrepreneurs that beside capital, need connections and support in general, and on the other hand there are investors that besides rentability are looking to invest more and more with a purpose, want to create value for their investments or be part of the new revolution of startups.
That is how without knowing it I joined our first VC fund, Mountain Nazca Colombia (recently rebranded EWA Capital). It was something absolutely new, people didn’t understand anything about our investment thesis. Today everyone talks about entrepreneurship, but 4 years ago in Latam no one knew about it: It has been an amazing journey but not an easy one.
We created the first micro fund that proved the concept, we raised USD 4M+, invested in 8 companies, created 800 jobs and so far generated a ROIC of 1,56X in three years. Today we are taking our second big step, raising our second fund ($USD30M) with a gender equality approach.
We are seeking to invest in early stage companies with a disruptive business model, that can be replicate in the region, solving socio- economic conditions in terms of education, health, financial services, retail and agro. Besides the companies where we invest , we implement a gender equality approach through a gender audit. We strongly believe in the power of diversified teams and the value that women can bring to the companies, having a different point of view.
