The motto this year for international women day´s celebration at IE was a continuation of last years´s #passiton. Last year´s pass it on from one generation to another evolved this year into pass it on from man to woman and woman to man. It became an all-encompassing “Thanks to her, and him; and you; and I”. It showed that we are all in this together; we all have many people, man and women, who helped us along our way. It also showed that there are many others, men and women, who need our help to keep moving along their journeys. This is not only about women. It is about all of us; men and women.
The many events organized were a perfect showcase to what women can do when they feel supported and empowered and how an organization like IE can contribute to further this cause.
Santiago Iñiguez, IE University president, stated clearly in his opening speech that a university is not only a “descriptive institution”. Our role is not only to teach students about the world as it is. Our role is also to get students to think about how it should be; to inspire them to start dreaming big.
At IE University, we have a duty to describe and be factual; to analyse the world as it is, as it works; be as rigorous as possible in this endeavour, and pass this knowledge on to our students.
We also have a duty to dream, to inspire, to spark curiosity. Part of our responsibility is to help our students move from the “what is” to the “what should be/ what could be”.
However, our duty will not be complete without modelling these behaviours and skills to our students. The best way of teaching something is to model it. If we want our students to be change agents, we need to become change agents ourselves. Ghandi already put it in words “be the change you want to see in the world”.
Celia De Anca stated in her welcome speech that, by celebrating women´s day, we celebrated change and how far we have come. Now it is time again to look ahead. The world needs all of us; all out voices and our contributions to create a place that is more inclusive and diverse.
Now it is your turn: what will your legacy be? What are you doing to bring it to the world? How will you #passiton?
