This week marked the start of the 2018 Dinner series of the IE Women in Business Club. The first event was dedicated to “Careers in Finance”: female professionals from the financial service sector joined IE students and alumni to discuss the challenges that women face in the workplace, and particularly in this industry.
The speakers shared their opinions on the financial sector in general. It appears that finance today is like any other sector, and that female professionals wanting to enter this industry have more opportunities compared to some years ago. Nevertheless, even if the working environment is changing, women are particularly underrepresented at higher levels of organizations.
The discussion also focused on tips and advices that women from any sector could benefit of. In particular, women should remember the importance to “say no”, even in junior positions – while it is equally important to say “yes” to the opportunities they can take. Female professionals should not let an unachieved promotion upset them: careers todays are flexible, and young professionals should learn to never give up, and to keep thinking positively. Eventually, a new opportunity will present itself.
