Last week, the IE Women in Business Club hosted the “Careers in Communications” dinner. We would like to thank the speakers for the active discussion they encouraged with students – their advice made this event a true success!
Bolola Lana, PR & Communications Manager, Louis Vuitton Mediterranean
Almudena López, Head of Communications Iberia, KLM-Air France
Alba García López, Senior Consultant, Llorente & Cuenca
Ana Díaz Sacristán, Communication Director at MasterCard
The dinner started with general advice that the speakers shared with students preparing themselves to enter a communication career after their graduate studies in IE. They all agreed that it is crucial not to forget the importance of networking, particularly when a professional reached her “comfort zone”. New opportunities will present themselves only if we proactively seek them and involve ourselves in many activities we are passionate about. There is no “right for all” path in a communication career: a position in agency will give us exposure to many accounts and the possibility to learn something new every day; on the other hand, a corporate communication function allows to truly focus and make an impact for the company. The choice should be based on what the candidate likes, what her true interests are for her future career.
The culture of the prospective company should never be underestimated. The speakers reminded us that the list of top management executives and the composition of board of directors for big corporations nowadays is disclosed publicly. If we want to work for a company that values gender equality, we should inform ourselves regarding its values and how it lives up to these values.
One of the participants, Alexina Clements, shared her opinion on the dinner: “The variety of backgrounds and industries of the speakers was incredibly valuable for the discussion. To understand how the same profession can be performed differently in fashion, aviation, finance or consulting was an inspiration to understand where I should apply after my Masters in IE”.
On behalf of the WIB Club, we would like to thank you for your participation and we look forward to see you again in one of our future events.
