The IE Girl Up Club is a relatively new club which started in September 2020. Girl Up is a UN Foundation based non-profit organization, headquartered in Washington D.C. They have created a global movement dedicated towards promoting gender equality and empowering young girls all over the world. Girl Up envisions a world where every girl can reach her full potential, thereby leading to a brighter future for us all.
Our club at IE is a branch of this umbrella organization and alongside approximately 3,500 other campus clubs around the world, we are committed towards helping Girl Up achieve their objective, whilst also creating change in our communities through our own initiatives. Our mission statement is “To put IE at the forefront of positive change and inspire the next generation to fight for what they believe in by taking action.” With our vast IE network and the diversity of our community, we strongly believe our work can truly create a difference and so we want to be able to use our privilege as IE students to contribute towards re-shaping a future of equality in all aspects.
The areas we focus on when designing our club events are the following:
- Gender Equality
- Gender-based Violence
- STEM for Social Good
- Sports for a Purpose
According to the UN and Girl Up, there is still no country in the world where women are equal. Hence, our events involve collaborations with other clubs/organizations in order to ensure we are creating an impact at a local, national and international level. In our first term, we were able to design activities with the STEM Talent Girl Initiative in Segovia and work together with high school girls to encourage them to pursue their true aspirations. We also kick-started the New Year 2021 by co-hosting a discussion panel of highly experienced female IE Masters students with the Women In Business Club. We are also working on the ‘Pass on the Knowledge’ campaign with The Sisterhood Foundation in India, with the aim of donating books to underprivileged children in India and future plans with this NGO are in the makes as well. We are also currently planning a big fundraiser event with the IEU Athletics Club in order to raise funds to donate for girls’ access to sports from Girl Up.
We hope that through our various events and partnerships with other organizations, we are able to actually contribute to this global movement of change. Our team values determination and a never give up attitude that continues to fight for social good, so what matters most to us is to be able to actually take action against social injustices. We believe in challenging the view that someone should feel ashamed to ‘Run like a girl,’ and instead creating a future where we are ‘Proud to run like a girl.’
