“I left my home to study abroad five years ago. During that time I have taken many important decisions as my parents have never imposed me anything. I joined the mentorship program because I first, wanted to familiarize myself with Spanish market and working environment; and second, hear the independent opinion of a person with more professional experience and knowledge than me.
I had never had the opportunity to be mentored before and therefore, in the beginning I was anxious about who I would be marched to. However, there was this one sentence at the matching event that I caught my attention- ‘when you meet the right person, you will immediately know this is the mentor for you’.
I was matched with Luis Hernandez and it has been a truly rewarding experience.
We have already met four times already, and I was also invited to a dinner with Luis’s family to get a first-hand glance at the life of a traditional Spanish family. This personal touch of his approach is what I saw in the matching event and what made me believe I could trust this back then ‘unknown’ person with my personal work and school-related issues; and seek his advice.
Luis has been very engaged with both my difficulties and interests. He managed to find time at very short notice for our first meeting, as I was leaving for an job interview abroad, in order to give me tips about the interview process. The invaluable advice and confidence he gave me prior to the interview helped me immensely.
The plan with the objectives for the mentorship program that was created was hardly a traditional one. We assigned each meetings an independent topic depending on my short-term struggles and longer-term objectives- such as interview tips; crucial conversations at the workplace, Spanish work culture.
I am very happy to have taken part in IE Women in Business’s Mentorship Program and I would recommend the program to all IE female students.”
