Last Tuesday, the IE Women in Business Club hosted the third round of its 2017 Dinner Series at the stunning members-club, Club Alma Sensai. Over an intimate dinner dedicated to the topic of technology, our high-profile guest speakers included Sarah Harmon (Head of Iberia, LinkedIn), Mari Carmen Fernandez Albertos (Head of E-Commerce, Google) and Diana Moreto (General Manager, Deliveroo). They spoke candidly about industry developments and ideas on bridging the gender gap in the sector.
Over the course of the dynamic discussion, some key insights included the critical importance of finding a mentor. The speakers highlighted that men will proactively seek out sponsors who usher them through the ranks of their company and women need to get better at this. In relation to the work-life balance that is so elusive for successful women in technology, the takeaway was that as a woman “you can’t actually have it all so learn to prioritise what matters to you most and understand that these priorities will continue to change.”
In relation to leadership styles, Sarah Harmon from LinkedIn pointed out that “great leaders breed more great leaders” and that “there’s no fixed template for successful management” so it’s critical to “develop a sense of empathy and cultivate unique capabilities in each team member to get the most out of them.”
On getting hired into the field, our speakers emphasized the importance of insatiable curiosity, hard work and the increasing importance of learning unique skills that will allow you to have a competitive advantage against other candidates i.e. data science.
Our next dinner will be focused on financial services and will take place on the 17th of May, follow us on Instagram and Facebook to be the first informed!
