I Am Woman, created and founded by KGEF (Karan Gupta Education Foundation) and IE Business School, it is a platform where power women from various fields, from CEOs of top companies to leaders in performing arts, are honored with women empowerment awards.
Gauri Sawant is a transgender activist who was thrown out of her home by her father at the age of 18, because of her sexuality. She lived on the streets of Mumbai and is fighting for equal rights from the government for the hijra, transgender & LGBT community. With great valour she saved and adopted an orphan girl child who was going to be sold to some men to pay off her mother’s debts. Her ‘badde papa’ wanted to meet Gauri but did not know how to find her as they were seprarated almost 20 years ago and he can’t read or write. When he heard about I Am Woman from the press he rushed to the event to find Gauri. With joint hands, he asked Gauri to forgive him and welcomed her back in his family. Gauri was elated at this happy reunion and it was an extremely emotional moment for them and all of us. Thanks to I Am Woman, Gauri was reunited with her family and we are grateful to have made a difference. All our power women have amazing stories to tell and each one motivates and inspires us to #makeadifference and#changetheworld.
